Sugarberry also known as Hackberry, Celtis laevigata, is a large and broad fast growing deciduous tree that can reach 70 feet. The leaves are simple and alternate on branches that lilts giving a slightly weeping appearance. The berry can be orange to red or dark purple and is favored by birds as a food source. Sugarberry is a larval plant for several species of butterflies, including the Snout Butterfly in south Florida, Tawny Emperor,Question Mark, and Hackberry Emperor. Sugarberry prefers moist soil but is adaptable to average conditions with establishment, can tolerate short periods of fresh water flooding but not brackish or salt water and is salt air tolerant.
