Flatwoods Plum, Prunus umbellata, is a deciduous, small, flowering, native tree with a short trunk and broad compact, flattened crown of slender branches. A dynamic bloomer of showy white blooms in the late winter/ early spring which occurs prior to emergence of new season foliage. The wild plums of this species are gathered for making jellies and jams. Like its closely allied species, Chickasaw Plum, and it is a great wildlife tree. Plant Flatwoods Plum for butterflies and other pollinators, as well as fruit for birds and mammals. Flatwoods Plum may be the best choice for urban landscapes since it does not sucker as profusely as Chickasaw Plum. Larval host for Giant Leopard moth
