Gallberry, Ilex glabra, is a native Holly that grows 3 to 6 ft. tall. It is a mound-shaped, colony forming shrub, lacking spines on the leaves, only having teeth toward the tip of leaves. Small white flowers in the spring are heavily used by pollinators are followed by black berries which persist well into winter. Birds use the fruit as a winter food source. Gallberry should be planted in moist to average, well drained, acidic soil. This plant can be demanding with adequate watering to establish.
