Gopher Apple, Licania michauxii, is a plant from very drained uplands and is a hardy low growing shrub or ground cover, It is semi evergreen and grows in partial sun to full sun. As a ground cover, it can be mowed but as a shrub it can reach heights of 3 feet or better. The clusters of small white flowers are attractive to many pollinators including some butterflies. The fruit is edible but low in flavor, however, it is an important wildlife food, especially for Gopher Tortoise.
