Black Ironwood
Black Ironwood, Krugiodendron ferreum, is a small, attractive, broad leaf evergreen, native tree that grows to the 20 to 30 foot height range. The canopy is dense and upright or rounded. The attractive leaves are dark and leathery. It is one of the best-behaved slow growing trees requiring minimal trimming. The tree is highly wind resistant with dense wood and it produces a dark drupe or fruit that the songbirds use for food and is also edible by people. Plant this tree in average to moist areas and monitor watering well for proper establishment. It is drought tolerant once established. It is salt air tolerant, but not tolerant of inundation with salt water. Plant Black Ironwood where a small wind tolerant and wildlife friendly tree is desired for specimen or border effect.
