Buccaneer Palm, Pseudophoenix sargentii sub-species saonae, is a rare palm from only two keys in Southeast Florida. Buccaneer Palm is listed as Endangered in Florida. It is a very slow growing palm that can eventually grow to 10 to 15 ft. They can range in color from blue-green to a white wax coated blue-green. The swollen trunks on mature specimens vary in shape. The fronds stems spread out in a flat, fan-shaped pattern, especially while the palm is young. The fruit is a red drupe that follows the creme colored flowers that can occur any time during the year. This palm is very wind, salt, and drought tolerant. Sun or shade adapted. It is very useful as an accent or specimen palm in small areas and nearly frost free coastal settings.
