Hercules Club also known as Toothache Tree, Zanthoxylum clava-herulis, is a native deciduous citrus family member. It is a spiny bush or small tree up to 25 feet in height, spreading in colonies as broad as tall. It is a native larval plant for Giant Swallowtail Butterflies and is particularly important to plant as non-native citrus trees continue to decline in groves and landscapes from 'Greening disease'. Native Americans and early settlers chewed the aromatic leaves to numb toothache pain. The panicles of greenish creme colored flowers attract pollinators and the small hard fruit attract birds. Hercules Club needs good drainage, full to partial sun and it is salt air and drought tolerant. Larval host for Giant Swallowtail.
