Jatropha, Jatropha integerrima, is an attractive tropical shrub native to Cuba and Hispanola. It's bright scarlet flowers are borne year around and attract hummingbirds and butterflies, including Monarch, Swallowtail and Zebra Heliconia butterflies. The flowers are 1 inch across and in clusters. The 3 lobed leaves are attractive and are 3 to 4 inches in length and slightly less in width. The plant can grow to 15 feet, but can be maintained at half that size. This plant is very drought tolerant once established and should be planted in partial to full sun. All plant parts are poisonous and this should be considered when planting with children and pets in mind.
