Myrtle Oak, Quercus myrtifolia, is an evergreen shrub or tree that slowly grows to 35 feet, with a rounded crown and has crooked branches and a tendency to form thickets when not trained into a upright tree form. Its bark is dark becoming furrowed with age. The leaves are dark green and leathery similar to Live Oak but more rounded in shape. This is a better oak choice than Live Oak or Laurel Oak for dry, drained properties that particularly call for smaller trees. Like its other oak cousins, this is a good wildlife tree and is a good canopy for shading smaller areas.
