Red Mulberry, Morus rubra, is a fast growing tree to the 30 to 40 foot range with a broad spreading canopy. It occurs in the wild in moist hammocks and has large rounded leaves, 3 to 4 inches wide and slightly longer, with variable lobed or entire leaves. This is a deciduous tree that is popular for its tasty fruit that is also a big draw for birds and other wildlife. The flowers are thin green to white catkins that are pollenated by wind. The plants are somewhat dioecious, but have flowers of both sexes to produce fruit. This tree is slightly tolerant of salt air, but should be sheltered from salt driven wind. Plant this tree in sunny, moist locations with room for it's spread and where the delicious fruit will not create a mess problem.
