Spanish Bayonet, Yucca aloifolia, is a plant from coastal areas that have sharp spiny leaf tips that is popular for security barriors. It is also a plant that is used for specimen effect in the landscape. It is a dynamic and distinct plant that should be planted in locations that does not present a hazard with it's sharp leaf tips. Spanish Bayonet is high drought tolerant, salt tolerant and cold hardy throughout Florida. Showy white bell shaped flowers are produced in a spire at the tips of the plant. It produces seed in black capsules after flowering. This is a larval (host) plant for cofaqui giant skipper, yucca giant skipper butterflies. It is also a nectar plant for Great Southern White butterflies and Hummingbirds. Plant Spanish Bayonet in drained locations in full sun to partial sun. It is adapted to salt exposed landscapes.
