Virginia Sweetspire is a deciduous shrub that reaches up to 8 ft tall. In cold areas Sweetspire gets fall foliage color. This shrub grows from the Everglades northward beyond Florida. It has elliptical leaves that are soft and compliment the vase shape of the plant. In late winter early spring, Sweetspire produces a terminal spire of sweet smelling fragrant flowers. It likes wet to moist soil but is adaptable to average conditions with extra attention when young. The plant is adapted to partial shade to open sun and is an excellent accent or border with its interesting texture and bloom. With this plant, it is especially important to plant eco-types from our area, as cultivars and eco-types from north Florida and other states do not perform the same and are not successful here.
