Sara Toftegaard is a designer and creative strategist with a background in graphic design, which now plays a core role in how she approaches garden design. She uses the same principles she once applied to visual identities—color theory, hierarchy, flow, and the golden ratio—to shape outdoor spaces that feel balanced, intuitive, and emotionally grounding. Since transitioning into landscape design during 2021, Sara has self-educated extensively through online courses and workshops in permaculture practices, herbal studies, edible and ornamental garden design, and re-wilding techniques. By combining this structured learning with hands-on experimentation, she creates gardens that are not only visually compelling but also ecologically functional and resilient. Exterior Home & Garden of Toftegaard Design, LLC has grown into a boutique studio known for its holistic, Florida-native garden designs, creating 3D and 2D plans for clients who want an entire outdoor living experience—including lighting, hardscaping, local artwork, water features, and more. Sara asks clients lifestyle and goal questions in order to develop a theme that guides the entire project, and she designs with native plants not only for Central Florida but for gardens nationwide.

Her work has received community recognition, including awards for landscape improvements, invitations to collaborate with neighborhood associations, and praise for her ability to transform properties in ways that benefit both homeowners and local ecosystems. Sara is known for replacing traditional turf lawns with Florida native or Florida-friendly alternatives that bring life, color, and movement back into a space. Her expertise in this area led her to be invited to speak at a local neighborhood meeting, where she shared the environmental benefits and design principles behind creating thriving, resilient yards. In her spare time, she co-manages a community garden in South St. Pete, practices drought-tolerant meadow design at her own property, and explores natural craft-making through workshops where she teaches how to create bouquets and wreaths using found materials from local communities.

Clients appreciate Sara’s clear communication, thoughtful planning, and warm, personable approach. Whether she’s mapping out lighting, walkways, irrigation, or layered plant palettes, she brings a 360-degree design philosophy to every project. By blending visual design principles with ecological understanding, she ensures each outdoor space is both beautiful and beneficial—for the homeowner, the community, and the surrounding environment.
