Loblolly Bay, Gordonia lasianthes, is a tall thin tree with attractive foliage and showy white flowers. Loblolly Bay is very dependent on moist to wet planting sites. This tree is NOT adaptable to average or dry landscapes and does not tolerate salt air or high wind exposures. It blooms from late spring to early fall and has rich evergreen leaves. The lightly fragrant 3 inch flowers occur singly at leaf axils but are concentrated at the branch tips. Loblolly Bay has a somewhat open habit with the evergreen leathery leaves cycling off through the growing season, and as the leaves cycle, they turn a crimson red which adds an interesting ornamental quality to the tree. Plant Loblolly Bay on pond, lake edges, or low areas where a highly ornamental tree is desired.
