River Oats also known as Spikegrass, Chamanthium latifolium, is grass that naturally comes from moist shady to semi shaded locations. In the late summer, the plant produces oat like seed heads that are reminiscent of Sea Oats and gracefully cascade to the side. This plant only grows from 2 to 3 feet in height. The seed is used by wildlife. In the late fall, the foliage dies off and the plant should be cut to the ground when it is no longer attractive or the wildlife has finished using the seed. During the winter or early spring, the emerging growth looks like spikes, hence the alternative name, Spikegrass. This is a charming plant to add to a mixed wildflower garden in partial shade or as an accent.
