Ilex opaca is a native, medium to large, evergreen tree. Grows 40 feet high and 15-20 feet wide. It is planted as an ornamental for the evergreen foliage. Profuse red fruit used in Christmas decorations or to attract songbirds. Pollinators are drawn to the small spring blooms. Plant in average to dry sites in full to partial sun. Hurricane wind resistant. It has spiky leaves so avoid planting close to walkways.
