Simpson Stopper, Myrcianthes fragrans, is a shrub or small tree growing 8-20 ft. in height. Dwarf varieties generally reach a maximum of 5 feet. It has leaves that are aromatic when crushed. It requires full sun to light shade and can be used as an accent or specimen shrub or small tree as well as buffer plantings. The small spidery flowers are attractive and fragrant during the spring and early summer. The flowers attract a diversity of pollinators including butterflies. The showy orange-red fruit is edible and especially attractive to songbirds. The red peeling bark adds an great ornamental quality. This is one of the finest shrubs or small ornamental and wildlife attracting trees for any landscape!

Little Leaf Dwarf variety reaches 2-5 feet high and wide. In dry, sandy conditions it stays smaller (18"-2 ft). In richer or moist conditions, it gets larger (5 ft). It comes from a population of stoppers with a smaller than average leaf size so it has a slightly different texture than other Simpson's Stoppers.

Compact variety reaches 2-5 feet high and wide. It has the same sized leaves as regular Simpson's Stopper.

Stoppermorph variety reaches 2-5 ft high and wide. The new growth is variegated, giving it added interest. Contrary to popular belief, Stoppermorphs do flower and fruit.

Geode reaches 3-5 feet high and wide. It has new growth with and orange-red tinge.
